The centre of Nieuwkerke is high on the ridge line. In the Middle Ages, the village had many more inhabitants than it does today. From the 14th century until 1582, when a fire reduced a large part of the centre to ashes, it was a prosperous textile centre, competing with Ypres. The town hall with its stepped gable and façade, decorated with two lions, still bears witness to this medieval prosperity. Nieuwkerke was ravaged by fire five times: in 1477, 1582, 1647, 1795 and finally in 1918. The neo-Gothic Church of Our Lady from 1922 was built according to plans of the former Gothic church from around 1600.
