in Lens-Saint-Servais "De Jeker" has its source. A river that flows through a large part of Haspengouw.
Before 1930, the Jeker was one of the most fish-rich rivers in the Netherlands. This came to an end due to discharges from the sugar beet industry and sewage discharges. Now that the water quality has improved, Maastricht is working on a more natural Jeker. The ability to flow naturally will be restored, fish will be able to swim up the Jeker again.
Due to the construction of the Albert Canal and the drainage by the First Dutch Cement Industry, the Jeker valley has dried up severely. The groundwater level has dropped by more than 1.5 metres compared to historical values
