A BIT OF HISTORY
This is the monument of the Polar Bears, the officers and men of the British 49th Infantry Division who formed a bridgehead across the Antwerp-Turnhout canal at Sint-Jozef Rijkevorsel in the night of 24 to 25 September 1944. From here, they began an advance that would eventually lead to the liberation of the region.
By bicycle one can relive the route followed by these troops. Along the route there are memorial stones - natural stone columns - in places that evoke certain historical memories of the bloody liberation days in Rijkevorsel. In addition to the image of a polar bear (the logo of the 49th ID), each column bears a serial number and a specific date. In the tourist office of Rijkevorsel you can purchase a brochure in which the route is described. The numbers and dates in this leaflet refer to a special anecdote from the diaries of the Polar Bears or to witness accounts.
