After World War I, the management of het Zwin was transferred to Compagnie het Zoute, a real estate company founded in 1908. This company designed and executed the plan to turn Knokke into a fashionable seaside resort. In 1934, King Leopold III built a villa on a piece of land that had been donated to him by the Compagnie het Zoute. He regularly moved in with Queen Astrid and their children. However, the fairy tale by the sea came to a sudden end in 1935 when Queen Astrid was killed in a traffic accident in Switzerland. From then on, King Leopold III rarely came to the villa. After the war years, the Compagnie het Zoute took over the villa and the surrounding garden again.
