The first Floraliën were organized in 1809 at the vanished inn Au jardin de Frascati. This inn was located at the intersection of the Coupure and Akkerstraat. The hall was barely 48 m² in size. The florists could showcase about a hundred rare plants. A competition was organized in which prizes and medals were awarded to the florists with the most beautiful plants.
The Faculty of Bio-Engineering Sciences – also known as the farmer's shed – was built in 1937 on the grounds of the notorious Rasphuis (founded in 1773). At the Rasphuis, prisoners scraped exotic wood (from Brazil and India). The released pigment was used in the textile industry in Ghent, which was in full expansion in the 19th century. The Rasphuisstraat, across the Coupure, is a final witness to this.
