Climbing the old dunes on the Kempische Heuvelrug. During the last ice age, the wind had free rein on the then flat, sparsely vegetated soils. Large quantities of soil particles were carried along with the north winds from the then dry North Sea basin: the heaviest particles (sand) were deposited less far than the finer particles (loam and clay) and ended up in Lower Belgium. This sand was atomized from nearby dune pans into land dunes. The Kempische Heuvelrug is a land dune ridge that was 'fixed' or fixed as vegetation occurred.
