This house was built during the Renaissance but its façade shows the characteristics of rococo. It houses the Museum of Contemporary Tapestries and displays a limited part of the collection of historical tapestries.
The art of tapestry weaving is a typical Flemish activity in which the 'verdures' of Oudenaarde have always been a household name: the Saint Barara's Guild has existed since 1441. For more than three centuries, this industry was the main source of income for the region. The house 'de Lalaing' includes a restoration workshop, a weaving workshop, VASA and an educational room.
In the restoration workshop, historical carpets, owned by the city, are treated and safeguarded against further deterioration, based on a scientifically sound method that has been in use since 1984.
In the VASA weaving workshop, modern carpets are manufactured according to the classic technique of 'legwork'. Courses in weaving techniques are also organized here.
The educational area contains photos of the weaving and restoration techniques.
