All around you you see American oaks, the undergrowth of the forest consists almost exclusively of seedlings of this exotic species. A little further along the path we also find a lot of larch, Norway spruce, holly and birch. Fortunately, a new forest management plan is in the making: over a period of 20 years, the programme is to gradually convert stocks of non-native species to the natural forest type birch-pedunculate oak and sessile oak-beech, partly through selective thinning. Of course, pedunculate oaks of autochthonous origin are replanted.
The Sweet chestnut is also very dominant. A feast for the chestnut collecting children in autumn, but unfortunately also a downer for the other tree species. And despite the many efforts of the green workers, you will still find the aggressive exotic American bird cherry on your path here.
Den Blakken is rich in mushrooms, in autumn you can smell the large stink mushroom from afar. On the many stumps of the sawn-off American bird cherry, the orange Sulphur Heads shine, Fairy Tails grow, Tinder fungi hang from the dead beech trees.
