Since 1895, the Mariapark with the Lourdes grotto in Belgium and the Netherlands has been a well-known pilgrimage site.
The apparition of Mary in Lourdes also sparked an unprecedented devotion to Mary in Meersel-Dreef.
The Capuchins were keen to capitalize on this, and the 'Our Lady of Lourdes in Meersel-Dreef' became the focal point of the devotion at the border.
The forest opposite the monastery, which initially served as a monastery garden, received a new purpose as a devotion park.
Father Jan Baptist Rutten had promised to establish a Lourdes grotto if he returned safe and sound from a mission in Punjab (Pakistan). And so it happened.
The Mariapark is accessible from sunrise to sunset.
Here a sound measurement has been conducted.
