The Leopold Canal (from Boekhoute to Heist) and the Schipdonk canal (from Deinze to Heist) would relieve the polders of excess rainwater. Canon Jozef Olivier Andries, pastor of Middelburg and member of the Senate of Representatives, was the great promoter for the realization of this drainage canal. The 43km long canal was dug in 1846-1848 and was originally intended as a connection between Zelzate and Heist. In Boekhoute, however, the excavation work was stopped. The canal has therefore never fully fulfilled its original destination. King Leopold I of Belgium inaugurated the canal in the middle of the 19th century. The canal is particularly picturesque and photogenic with its double row of trees on both banks and is also known for its fishable banks.
