When the cannon fired its first shots on 26 April 1915 (5), the Westhoek population was immediately frightened. Poperinge had to endure a hard time on 26 and 27 April. (...)
The confusion was so great, also among the French army command at Poperinge, and the blows were so fierce that at first it was suspected that the cannons had been set up in the woods around Sint-Sixtus! According to preserved notes of the monks of the Abbey of St. Sixtus (6), French soldiers, including Spahi, and gendarmes surrounded the woods and captured all those they found there and then released them. No cannons, gunners or spies were found, but the rumors continued and even Father Abbot was suspected of arranging the artillery that would be located within the abbey walls. (...)
