AXA building

The impressive building on your right is the former headquarters of AXA, a major insurance company. The vast complex, which consists of about 57,000 m² of office space, boasts an iconic 1970s architecture. Following the departure of the insurance company, the building is awaiting a new owner. The United States quickly expressed interest in moving its new embassy there. But the country plans to demolish the emblematic building, a project opposed by the municipality and local residents. The municipality successfully applied to have the building placed on the Brussels heritage preservation list. In the end, it was the Antwerp-based Cores Group that acquired the site for 50 million euros, with the aim of converting it into a mixed-use complex combining a hotel with an auditorium and restaurants, co-working spaces, retail areas, sports facilities and a cultural space, all in keeping with the architectural heritage. The works are expected to be completed by January 2023.
