Chapel

At the corner of Wolverijstraat and Lampestraat stands a beautiful rural brick chapel, in the shade of two lime trees. People sometimes call her "Vanhauwaertskapelle" in reference to the last inhabitant of the farm and guardian of the chapel, Madeleine Van Hauwaert. The original chapel was built in 1776, at the same time as the neighbouring farmhouse, partially destroyed in 1889 by fire. The original stone bearing the inscription "Lieve Vrouwe van Bijstand, 1776" was removed from the wall in 1983 by a vandal and has never been found. The current owner Vandecasteele bought the chapel in 1988. During a refurbishment, a new door was placed and the stolen ashlar was replaced by a new one with the inscription "Onze Lieve Vrouw van altijddurende Bijstand". The artist Julia Vandenbroucke has made a new original painting for the chapel. It is now in the shade of a new broad-leaved linden. In 1988, a diseased tree specialist took care of the original 1776 linden, but on Christmas night 1999, the old linden tree did not withstand the storm. Fortunately, he did not touch the chapel. The owner has placed a bench for passers-by to sit and rest. On May 20, 2007, a young man crashed into the chapel with his car, which was completely destroyed. The driver did not survive. The statue of Our Lady remained intact. The owner rebuilt the chapel, which can again be admired in all its splendor since August 8, 2007.
