The Coupure is one of the most exclusive residential sites in Ghent. Along the 1580 meter long Coupure, in the shade of linden and plane trees, stand the most beautiful townhouses in the city. They were built by the 19th-century jet set of Ghent. They are attracted by the mix of vast fields with windmills and architecturally well-kept commercial buildings. Among them are factory owners, entrepreneurs, doctors, magistrates, and... professors.
Between 1841 and 1992, as many as sixty lived there! The residence of the professor is more than just a private home within walking distance of the university buildings. The professor has his study, library, and private practice there. It happens that students become like family to their mentor and are interested not only in the private collection but also in the professor's daughter. It is remarkable how many family or political ties are forged among professors’ families: true academic dynasties emerge, such as the families Fredericq, Kluyskens, and Storme.
Not only the Ghent jet set enjoys the Coupure. For ordinary Ghent residents and students, the Coupure is a favorite "promenade." A green oasis that escapes the factory smoke of the city center. It is the starting point for long walks along the Leie. Students rent their rowing boats at the Coupure for playful romantic outings to Drongen and Sint-Martens-Latem.
Since the Ringvaart leads freight ships around the city center, it has become quieter on the Coupure. Along with shipping, the gigantic factory depots have also disappeared. The largest building along the Coupure is now the Faculty of Bioengineering. Although the university today has many more professors than in the 19th century, you will hardly find them here. Students, you will still see along the Coupure, but not in rowing boats, rather jogging. Often in a trendy sweater from UGent!
