Canon Barth from Westerlo was a member of the church board of the St. Dymphna Church in Geel. During the Austrian reign (1713 to 1794) he bought many municipal moorlands in the area. During the Closed Time, the period around 1798 when church services were not allowed to take place, he sought shelter in his farm Scherpensteen. He had the cross placed at the crossroads, which is popularly known as the cross of the hut. There was the large hut Scherpensteen and a small hut a bit further away.
