The municipal services were already housed in 1858 in the village inn on the corner of Gaversesteenweg and Grepstraat. The inn was part of a farm that was already operated in the 18th century by the Vanderheggen family, "koeyhouders" by profession. During the session of February 20, 1959, the city council decided to proceed with the construction of a town hall, according to the plans of architect Leon Cottenie. For this purpose, a piece of land from the parsonage garden was made available by the diocese. Jonkheer Adrien Plissart, mayor of Schelderode from 1 January 1959 until the merger of the municipalities (1 April 1977), donated the stained glass window that is located on the right side of the building. Also on this side one notices the former prison, housed in the small outbuilding. After the merger with Merelbeke, the building lost its function as a town hall. Since then it has housed various institutions and has been rented out to the social housing company "Merelbeekse Sociale Woningen cv" since 1997.
