Until the 17th century there was a motte (an artificially constructed earthen hill) with a castle on this site. The ponds near the castle are the remains of the canals around this motte.
The construction of the castle of Schelderode, commissioned by architect and antiquarian Florimond Van De Poele, in collaboration with Jean Baptiste de Bethune, lasted from 1862 to 1865.
Both were co-founders of the Ghent Sint-Lucas school and were at the basis of neo-Gothic architecture. They opted for Bruges Gothic, which was imitated down to the smallest details. The building was built in Scheldesteen, baked in a local field oven. The new castle was decorated with murals by Jean Baptiste de Bethune, stained glass by Arthur Verhaegen and carvings by the Declercq brothers from Merelbeke.
The castle domain with the motte on the western bank of the Melsenbeek, together with the surroundings of the Sint-Martinuskerk and the presbytery, have been protected as a village view since 10 February 2000.
The domain is not accessible to the public.
