The Aelmoeseneibos is used as a research forest by Ghent University. They want to use their climate forest to find out whether more species-rich forests actually store a larger amount of CO2. The 2.4-hectare climate forest would absorb 20 tonnes of CO2 per year. That is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of 6 inhabitants. Professor Kris Verheyen explains that you have to afforest three times the surface of Melle in order to compensate for the carbon protrusion of all the inhabitants of Melle. Afforestation for CO2 compensation can therefore only be a small part of the solution.
