You are now cycling across the scene of the world expos in 1935 and 1958. The Heyzel palaces date back to the first world expo. The King Baudouin stadium was still known as the Jubel (meaning Jubilee) stadium back then. Cycle races and even world championships were held here on a temporary wooden track between 1930 and 1949.
The Atomium is the true symbol of the 1958 world expo and still remains a tourist attraction. In 1958, the Tour de France even kicked off in Brussels, due to the Expo 58. Not only does this ‘strategic zone’ in the Brussels Region have a rich history, it also has a promising future. Development plans have been drawn up for a new city district, which includes homes, shops and perhaps even a pond.
