As you cross the Rogierlaan take a moment to recall the past: in the early 1890s, Brussels’ cycle-crazy residents often organised cycling competitions here! The straight avenue with lots of ups and downs was a perfect competition course. Participants subsequently cycled in and out of the valleys of the river Zenne and Maalbeek.
You can also see the yellow Villo! bikes from here. With a subscription you may borrow a bike at one station and return it to another. Many users cycle from the upper to the lower city and return by public transport. Villo! staff redistribute the bikes to the different stations. JCDecaux, advertising-panel operator, introduced the system in 2009 with 2,500 bikes and 180 stations. Ten years later these numbers have doubled.
