Guynemer Pavilion

Langemark-Poelkapelle was the scene of the very first world fire for four years. Lying between the Ypres-Yser canal and the hard-fought ridge from Westrozebeke to Wijtschate, it is part of the Ypres Salient, the Ypres Salient. After 4 years, the municipality was wiped off the map.

The brand new Guynemer Pavilion houses a two-part exhibition, where the visitor learns more about the French story and military aviation. The french army's share proved enormously important in the predominantly British offensive of the Third Battle of Ypres. Although the French forces were in a deep crisis in 1917, a more cautious approach allowed them to advance to the Forest of Houthulst. In addition, the Air Force was deployed in 1917 on an unprecedented scale. Aviation evolved from pure observation to an integral part of warfare.
