The construction of the Leuven City Cemetery was decided during the French rule. The cemetery is located in Heverlee between Tivolistraat, Bierbeekstraat and Pleinstraat and the Philips site. However, it was only when the municipalities were made responsible for it and were allowed to collect costs for it that it was really put into use. Until then, people preferred to be buried as close to the churches as possible. If possible, preferably in the churches themselves, but that was only reserved for the rich stinkers. However, this custom became unlivable, since those churches were the center of the communities. For example, a site outside the center of the city and the former residential areas was chosen.
