Kuregem

Anderlechts’ municipal hall dating back to 1879 stands here on the square with its back to … Anderlecht! When the building was erected in neo-Flemish renaissance style, preference was given to the prosperous district of Kuregem rather than the centre of Anderlecht, which was still rural in those days.

The favourable position of Kuregem, near Brussels city, the canal and the railway, caused its rapid development in the 19th century. This also made it an attractive district to many Flemish people moving from the countryside to the city. One of these was the professional cyclist René Vermandel from Zelzate, winner of the Brussels Zesdagse (6-day race) in 1927, and who ran the brasserie La Bécasse at house number 4. Until the 1970s this was the club house of the cycling association Cureghem Sportief, which is still active today.
