Het Anderlechtse gemeentehuis uit 1879 staat hier op het plein met zijn rug naar… Anderlecht. Bij de bouw van het pand in neo-Vlaamse-renaissancestijl krijgt de welvarende wijk Kuregem de voorkeur boven het dan nog landelijke centrum van Anderlecht.
De gunstige ligging van Kuregem, nabij Brussel-stad, het kanaal en de spoorwegen, zorgt in de 19de eeuw voor een snelle ontwikkeling. Het maakt de wijk ook aantrekkelijk voor de vele Vlamingen die van het platteland naar de stad trekken. Zo ook profrenner René Vermandel uit Zelzate, winnaar van de Zesdaagse van Brussel in 1927, die op huisnummer 4 de brasserie La Bécasse uitbaat. Tot in de jaren 1970 is dat het clublokaal van de nog altijd bestaande wielerclub Cureghem Sportief.
