Il municipio di Anderlecht del 1879 si trova qui nella piazza con la schiena rivolta verso… Anderlecht. Durante la costruzione dell'edificio in stile neo-fiammingo-rinascimentale, il benestare del quartiere Kuregem ha la priorità sul allora ancora rurale centro di Anderlecht.
La favorevole posizione di Kuregem, vicino alla città di Bruxelles, al canale e alle ferrovie, favorisce nel XIX secolo uno sviluppo rapido. Rende il quartiere anche attraente per i molti fiamminghi che si trasferiscono dalla campagna in città. Così anche il ciclista professionista René Vermandel di Zelzate, vincitore della Sei Giorni di Bruxelles nel 1927, che gestisce il bar La Bécasse al numero civico 4. Fino agli anni '70 è stato il locale del club di ciclismo ancora esistente Cureghem Sportief.
