The Lapscheurse Gat is a creek south of Sluis, which was formed as a result of the flooding of 1583 as a side arm of the Zwin. The sea channel initially extended to Heille, but in 1591 the dike also broke there, whereby the channel further penetrated the land up to 1.5 km past Middelburg. Thus, the Papenkreek and the Meulekreek were created. A side channel of the Lapscheurse Gat, the current Stierskreek, reaches and has reached Aardenburg. On the Belgian side, one can still find the Verloren Kreek, east of the village Sint-Rita.
