The Ghent-Bruges Canal, locally also known as Brugse Vaart and Gentse Vaart, is a canal between the Belgian cities of Ghent and Bruges. The canal is 42 km long. The towpaths are part of the cycle junction network and between Bruges and Aalter of the F6 cycle highway. As early as the 13th century, Bruges widened and deepened the Reie and Zuidleie. In this way, it tried to increase the supply of drinking water and to be able to discharge estuaries such as the Zwin. To further increase the volume, between 1270 and 1280 they dug from the Zuidleie to the Hoge Kale. This also allowed a part of the Hoge Kale to flow into the Zuidleie Canal.
