This monument is a commemoration of the Assyrian genocide.
The Assyrian or Aramaic genocide was a massacre perpetrated under the leadership of the Young Turks movement, in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. According to eyewitnesses, including German officers and neutral diplomats, as well as news reports in the media, hundreds of thousands of Assyrians living in northern Mesopotamia were violently deported, starved, and killed during the period from 1915 to 1920.
