In 1960, the Nederschelde, a branch of the Scheldt, was closed at the Reep to make way for... a parking lot. 1,000 years of history sacrificed for the sake of the automobile. It took some time for the people of Ghent to swallow the pill. There were certainly some unpleasant odors, but there are now solutions to this problem. In 2002, the city decided to restore the former confluence of the Scheldt and the Lys. The work lasted 16 years and the result is worth the look.
