En 1960, el Nederschelde, brazo del Escalda, fue cerrado a la altura del Reep para dar paso a... un aparcamiento. 1.000 años de historia sacrificados al servicio del automóvil. A la población de Gante le costó un tiempo digerir la píldora. Ciertamente, había molestias olfativas, pero ahora existen soluciones a este problema. En 2002, la ciudad decidió restaurar el antiguo confluente del Escalda y el Lys. Las obras duraron 16 años y el resultado merece la pena.
