Located in Calestienne, the site includes the Gouffre de Belvaux as well as the valley of the Lesse situated just upstream, where the course of the river is rugged and tumultuous. The whole area presents exceptional geological and geomorphological interest, particularly due to the large number of visible karst phenomena. The valley floor is occupied by a riverside forest that shelters several rare species such as the smooth elm (Ulmus laevis) and the false buttercup anemone (Anemone ranunculoides). The habitat is heavily frequented by the dipper (Cinclus cinclus) and the banks of the Lesse are locally favorable for the nesting of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). The invertebrate fauna includes various uncommon species of gastropod mollusks.
