This anthropogenic site covering about forty hectares is located in western Hainaut, eleven kilometers southeast of Tournai, wedged between the Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes canal and the French border near the Flines state forest (Nord department). It mainly includes the grassy strip of the civil aerodrome of Maubray and a sandy hill whose origin lies in the canal excavation works. The habitats that have gradually developed there are noteworthy: sandy lawns, heather moorland, wet meadows, thickets, and varied woodlands, etc. The overall site hosts a rich flora including several remarkable species for the region: the dwarf cotton-grass (Filago minima), false vetch (Vicia lathyroides), creeping willow (Salix repens), spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata), among others. The local fauna is also very diverse with many interesting elements. The sandy area supports a significant population of sand-dwelling hymenopterans including solitary bees Andrena vaga and Colletes cunicularius, as well as the orthopteran Tetrix ceperoi, a typical species of wet dune depressions.
