In the Molenstraat, on the bridge over the Mark, there has been the Laermolen since the 14th century. Initially it was only a grain mill, later there was also a butcher mill or oil mill. Since 2004 the mill has been beautifully restored. It looks again as it did in 1800.
The name of this mill is first mentioned in 1391. It was already an oil mill then, but it looked different from now: it was probably built in wood. In 1586 this wooden Laermolen was completely destroyed.
Around 1620 the mill was rebuilt and got about its current shape. Later the mill was expanded with a second mill building on the left bank. The two mills are connected to a majestic 30-metre-long straw roof. After the bridge was also renewed in 1744, and the Mark was partly straightened, the Laermolen entered its golden heyday. The date 1744 can still be read in the bluestone blocks in the bridge pillars.
The double mill, with the straw roof and the two wooden water wheels, was used for many old postcards. In 1911 the lockwork and the grain mill on the left bank were demolished. All that remains of the oil mill on the right is a dismantled, empty ruin. In 1996 the mill was restored by some enthusiastic Hoogstratenaren.
There is a lot going on in the vicinity of the Laermolen. By means of a widely supported participation process, consideration is given to the development of this historic natural landscape. Through natural roadsides, redevelopment of the mill pond, nature development in the Valley of the Mark, ... a green experience zone is being developed where residents, visitors and nature lovers will find what they are looking for.
