On the path to the Kesterberg you will find round boulders that protrude a little above the surface here and there. These are flints or cherten. Knock two of them together and give them a sniff. You will smell a typical sulfur smell as if you are burning hair. There are also sulfur bridges in her. Hence the similar smell. These boulders come from layers that were once deposited at the end of the tertary. But that layer has now completely disappeared. But the boulders from that layer can still be found, on top of the remnants of the older tertiary layers. That is why this gravel is also called the basic gravel of the tertary.
