Here you can see an explanation of the work of Bruegel, who was very active in this area. He wove many local views and scenes into his work. He painted this "Census at Bethlehem" in 1566. It was in that year that the four major cities of Brabant (Brussels, Louvain, Antwerp and 's Hertogenbosch) submitted a petition for the softening of the religious placards. The strict religious ordinances, called edicts, were aimed at eradicating Protestantism root and branch. There had been rumours that the Spanish Inquisition would be sent to carry out the edicts. It was also in this year that the first hedge sermon is held in Roesbrugge at the point "Ten Vijf Weghen" by the former hatter Sebastiaan Matte.
