Since 1912, St. Peter's Castle has been part of the outer belt of forts around Antwerp. It is located next to the railway line of Puurs, between Fort Bornem and Fort Liezele and functioned as an extra defensive point between the two forts during WWI.
After the parish of Sint-Pieter van puurs bought the domain in 1954, it was transformed into a playground. Today, the leisure park with its play paradise and cafeteria in the shadow of the ski jump is still a true refuge for young and old.
While children have fun in the playground, the hut village or the sandpit, you can enjoy a drink in the cafeteria. Or discover the flower meadow or marsh pond.
Since 1998, it has been managed by Natuurpunt, which monitors and maps the housing of various bats in the central bunker area. In the well-preserved entrance building there is an information room about the local fauna and flora and it is also the starting point of two nature-educational hiking trails.
