Description

The church of Our Lady of Heaven is located at the highest point of Mariekerke. The current church was rebuilt after the fire of 1914 in 1925. Only the white tower with late Romanesque substructure was preserved. In the church you can admire various works of art .

In front of the church is the statue of the priest-poet Jan Hammenecker and on the dike you will find the ferry from Mariekerke with the ferry to Moerzeke and Sint-Amands. In this area you can also spot a copy of a fishing boat: a Mariekerk jol. The history of fishing is explained in the shipping and fishing museum in the Omgangstraat.
