Here you are at Paardeweide-Oost, a Controlled Flood Area (GOG). As part of the Sigma Plan, the Scheldt runs over the dike here during extreme storm tides, in the area, in order to protect the inhabited areas from flooding. Paardeweide-oost may only flood once a year (see photo). New plants, birds, fish soon find their way into these brand new, landscaped areas. This is especially important here, as the Paardeweide is a European Birds Directive area.
