Sometimes we see dark brown, almost black metallic shiny bands or hollow iron rings in the iron sandstone. This is called goethite . Stones with a lot of goethite were given the name of clapper stones. They were also used in the Middle Ages for the extraction of iron. From 1932 to 1938 an attempt was made to exploit the iron industrially in nearby Gelrode.
