[Iron sandstone] The stonemason worked the stone until it had the perfect shape to be used. This often happened at the construction site. In the Middle Ages, the stonemason used a stone axe and later hammer and chisel. Traces of preservation can easily be recognized by the grooves in the stone surface. Parallel lines are probably from the chisel, while fanning notches are from the stone axe. Chisel and axe quickly became blunt. There was always a blacksmith nearby to repair or sharpen the material.
