Before the First World War, the contradictions between Catholics, socialists and liberals degenerated into harassment and even street violence. In the night of 7 to 8 April 1912, the small chapel on the beguinage next to the convent was broken open and this statue of Christ was looted. It was spotted floating in the Demer and brought back in the evening by a skipper.
For weeks, a fierce controversy gripped the city. The liberals and socialists accused the Catholics of an act of provocation. A hundred francs were even offered to those who could tell the true circumstances.
The Catholics, in turn, accused the socialists and liberals of anti-clericalism. To commemorate this fact, the Catholic clergy instituted an annual Easter Monday penitential march to the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
