The Schipdonk and Leopold canals are well known in the Bruges surroundings as the Blinker and the Stinker. The canals were dug in the mid-19th century to ensure the drainage of the East Flanders polders, and from the very beginning, the Leopold Canal earned the flattering label 'Blinker' thanks to its pure Meetjesland water.
