St. Bavo's Church already existed around 1100. The church was not spared when the iconoclasm (1570 – 1580) swept through our provinces. After the church was plundered by the Beggars, it burned down completely in 1588.
In 1904 major renovation work took place. For example, a new floor was laid, a new roof covering was installed,.... After WWI, the church had become a ruin. It was rebuilt in 1925 in late Gothic style.
The tower of the church is a listed monument. Due to the large size of the church of Merkem, it is also called "the cathedral of the Westhoek".
