Cyriel Van Hauwaert (1883-1974) was the very first Flandrien and the first Belgian to win races abroad: Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix and the first Belgian stage win in the Tour de France (1909). Success already brought fame and money in those days. Farmer's son Cyriel no longer had to slave away in the fields. He became an example to young people. Many a bold young man suddenly wanted to become a cyclist. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare.
