Marc Demeyer, nicknamed ‘the Giant from Outrijve’, was mainly a lead-out man for riders like Freddy Maertens, who was sometimes allowed to have a go at it himself. In 1976 he won Paris-Roubaix by outsprinting none other than Francesco Moser, Roger De Vlaeminck and Hennie Kuiper. Demeyer was at his best when slaving away on his bike. He liked to demonstrate his strength, which is why reporters called him one of the last Flandriens. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare, Maurice Terryn.
