Karel Van Wijnendaele was a true jack-of-all-trades. He was a journalist as well as an author, team manager, race organiser and manager. And above all: he left his indelible mark on the history of Belgian bicycle racing. In 1913, Van Wijnendaele was the editor-in-chief of the brand-new sports paper entitled Sportwereld. To promote sales of the newspaper, on 25 May 1913 Van Wijnendaele organised the very first Tour of Flanders. Flanders was immediately bitten by the cycling bug. On the picture you see Karel Van Wijnendaele, nicknamed ‘Mac Bolle’, who is posing in the midst of his Flandriens. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare.
