Description

Sometimes we still see remnants of hedges between the meadows and along the field paths. In addition to hawthorn and hornbeam, this field maple or Spanish maple is a regularly occurring species. Although the tree can grow in many types of soil, it occurs naturally mainly in calcareous and nutrient-rich soil. The flowers are a good source of nectar and pollen, and are frequented by bees. The fruits are eaten by finches such as the hawfinch. The bark is nutrient-rich, which makes it easy for mosses and lichens to grow on older trees.
