The Brewery De Snoek lies behind the frontlines, the copper boilers were not claimed here for war purposes. Other breweries needed to cease their activities because the copper was used for munitions or their robust buildings offered ideal barricades. In 1910 Belgium had 3,244 breweries, in 1930 that number had fallen to only 1,568.
Breweries quenched the thirst of the soldiers and refugees, their turnover rose spectacularly, as did the prices. It was different with the quality. The brewer at De Snoek refused to drink his own beer, he knew that the water came from the canal. When it turned out that there was coli bacteria in the beer, the military authority decided to brew its own beer in Veurne.
The exhibition the Story of the Thirst in the Great War tells much more.
