Soldiers who died in the nearby military hospital Clep during the war were interred in the graveyard in Hoogstade. Burials started as soon as April 1915. Until the end of the war burials took place here. The dead were mostly from the military hospital in the rest home Clep, which was one and a half kilometers away.
The cemetery was redone in the period 1924-1925. The official Belgian gravestone was designed in 1920 by the Brussels architect Simons by commission from the Ministry of National Defence. It lasted until 1924 before the gravestone was officially inaugurated. In 1968 the Belgian military cemetery at Reninge was cleared. 117 graves were brought here. Now you can find 825 graves, of which 20 are British.
