This walking path, which goes all the way to Staden, is one of the many ‘slow roads’ (paths for non-motorized traffic) that can be found in Hooglede-Gits. After taking Gits on 19 October 1914, a German regiment also captured Hooglede, and a group of hostages – which included town clerk Edward Vermeulen – was forced to walk to Staden.
